Air Conditioner Problems

Most air conditioning problems could have been solved or prevented simply by doing some preventative maintenance measures. Below you will find the best preventative maintenance tips followed by the most common air conditioner problems, as well as suggestions and solutions to help you deal with those problems.

 AIR CONDITIONER PROBLEMS PRIMARY TIPS

  • The number one thing that the homeowner should do before running the air conditioner each year is to make sure that the outside part of the air-conditioning unit is clean and free of debris as well as all intake filters inside home.
  • The unit needs to be able to draw in air in order to work properly.
  • It may require a spray of the hose, but it is important to be careful around the electrical components. Keep water out of them.
  • If the unit is dirty It won’t be able to draw in sufficient air to cool the inside of the house.  Which also means it will work harder and cost more and do a lousy job.
  • I highly recommend doing this task at least 3 to 4 weeks before the hot season arrives in making sure that your air conditioner is working properly.
  • So you don’t get caught needing an air conditioner repairman at the peak of the season when they’re all backed up for a week.  Or you have to pay  emergency prices of 100-150 dollars an hour

Common Air Conditioning Problems

  • Most air conditioning problems are a result of insufficient maintenance. some are however from a faulty install or perhaps a bad service.
  • There are a number of ways to check for and fix problems  with your air conditioner.
  • These problems can include a faulty compressor failing to turn on, low airflow, and water leaks.
  • If your air conditioner is turning on  and the air isn’t as cool as it usually is.  Your refrigerant may be low.  You may need to clean off the condenser coils or possibly the evaporator. This can be done with a soft broom and/or a vacuum. Only use a hose if you know what you are doing as there can be an electrical hazard.
  • In addition the filters may need to be replaced. It is always important for your unit to be clean.
  • Pay extra attention throughout the season, especially if your unit is in an area where it can receive things like dust or lawn or falling from trees or shrubs.

These should be included in an air conditioner service call:

  • Check to make sure that that Freon levels are accurate,if they are low this would indicate a leak, which needs to be addressed before anything else is done
  • Inspect all electrical components looking for corrosion or burns or anything out of the ordinary.
  • Clean entire outside condenser unit as needed,it should be clear of all debris.
  • The thermostat should be calibrated to make sure it is accurate.

Master these fairly easy chores and you probably won’t have anymore air conditioner problems.

Compressor

The compressor is the main component of the cooling in your air conditioning system. It is chosen by the maker for optimum performance and longevity and is generally good for many years of operation. It is lubricated and cooled by the flow of the refrigerant and if not contaminated will run for years and years without any trouble. If it fails, it normally needs to be replaced which includes and usually will also require the R&R of the refrigerant.

Coils

They are made of tubing designed to efficiently transfer heat. To operate  at peak efficiency coils need to be clean. Dirty coils are a common problem that cause poor air conditioning performance.

Air conditioning systems have an inside coil that is specifically for the air that goes into your home, and is used for cooling and is called the evaporator coil. It condenses water from the air that will drip onto a pan/tray and water will  drain or escape to the outside.

The outside coil does the opposite., It gets hot and will release heat to the outside. The outside coil is the condenser coil. It is called that because it condenses the refrigerant inside the tubing and it draws air in to be cooled. Remember, this is the primary component  and if dirty will cause you air conditioner problems.

I have a 5 year old Gooden HVAC system. Last month the catch tray inside the unit melted and flooded three rooms. After the ”
repairs” and 1300.00 in labor. The system will freeze up constantly. The service company says it is our fault. First we were setting it to cold. 70 degree 24/7. Then Our thermostat was defective. Replaced with new. Still freezing. Then we haven’t changed the filter often enough. We have changed it 3 times in the last 10 days. Now we have to make sure that all the ducts are wide open. We had closed off some of the seldom used rooms (3). The unit is still freezing up We even raised the thermostate to 75. What do we do now?

  • John Burnett:

BTW. I want to THANK YOU in advance. For what ever your answer is. Just being able to ask someone helps. THANK YOU!
